Facilitating the aligned financial requirements of Grass Roots Sports Clubs

Executive Summary

The incorporation of Golazzo as a company has been formed principally by David Platt and Scott Hannah. David is a former England soccer captain who is involved in grass roots football coaching via his son, Scott the chairman of the club, also with two boys representing a team within it.

Both are involved in the administration of the club on a voluntary basis, and acutely aware of the challenges faced.

Those challenges have been increased due to the current economic climate which, despite operating in a wealthy area of the country, have seen a decline in numbers of children playing for the club. In addition, annual running costs have increased dramatically due to inflation, an extremely difficult challenge for a ‘not for profit’ organisation.

It stands to reason that the challenges faced by the founders club are replicated in practically every grass roots sports club in the UK, and beyond.

Golazzo was incorporated to align clubs with the same financial challenges to create a larger whole, with a view to reducing expenditure whilst simultaneously increasing fund-raising activities. By doing this, the increased cost of running a grass roots sports club does not have to be passed on to the parents of children who simply want to play sport.

The ‘reduction of costs’ arm of the business will focus on acquiring the same products as currently purchased at a reduced rate via volume purchasing. A by product of this will be the ability to alleviate time resource on volunteers of the individual clubs that onboard with Golazzo.

The fund-raising arm of the business centres on an intuitive pool betting game designed by David Platt which enables clubs to run their own game on a white label basis, benefitting from the revenues they produce as a club rather than as a whole.

The appropriate licences will be acquired to run the pool betting game from a central governance. Whilst the game has a gambling element attached, it’s primary purpose is that of a fund-raising vehicle for the individual clubs.

Companies that build the software for online gambling tend to be focussed on providing generic games to be commercially exploited. Golazzo requires a simple bespoke platform and will therefore obtain a remote gambling software licence to develop it’s own proprietary game and have the ability to adapt and introduce other games in the future if required.

The market is vast, with over 150,000 clubs making up the target audience, all facing similar challenges. Initial discussions with suppliers have been extremely positive, with brands keen to ‘jump on board’ with aiding Golazzo with the added incentive of maximising their own exposure due to the profile of David Platt.

Whilst funding will be provided to build and develop the business, and provide an ongoing runway of funds, both elements are expected to be immediately cash generating. With the founders not requiring salaried positions at outset, profitability is expected very early.

Grass Roots Sports Clubs number circa 150,000 in the UK alone.

The current economic climate means increased costs associated with the running of a grass roots sports club. These ‘not for profit’ organisations meet their expenditure primarily via the collection of player subscriptions, from a body of people also living within this inflated economic climate. Despite having several aligned financial requirements, there is no aligned thinking.

It will create, administrate and manage an aligned group of grass roots sports clubs to maximise purchasing power for aligned requirements and provide an online pool betting platform designed to raise funds on a sustainable basis.

Two of the founders have extensive experience of being deeply involved in the running of a Grass Roots Football Club and understand the difficulties of managing them efficiently. In addition these founders have skill sets derived from other business interests and past careers .

The third founder has a profound expertise in deep tech. Two other individuals have agreed to act as board advisors. One has extensive experience in the running and administration of complex businesses, having recently exited with his own company, the other a veteran in accountancy with his own practice.

The company intends to initiate with a target audience of circa 70 grass roots football clubs from the league the founders club operates in, growing organically from that position.

Market Analysis
& Strategy

There are circa 47,000 Grass Roots Football clubs in the UK alone. Other sports increase this target market to 150,000 clubs. Scandinavian countries operate their grassroots clubs in a similar manner providing an immediate opportunity for further growth at a later date.

Administrators within these organisations are volunteers looking to run their clubs on a more efficient basis with regard to cost control and time resource they can apply.

There are several aligned requirements of clubs (see next slide), all of which can be introduced at strategic times.

At present, there is little or no direct competition. Clubs utilise their own favoured suppliers, either from a cottage-style industry of small retailers or from larger online retailers.

We have already had a positive dialogue with a major supplier of football equipment and a large online retailer they supply. Both are keen to form a relationship that benefits all. Further positive dialogue has been held with a football kit supplier as well as another bespoke kit supplier. These discussions are expected to be replicated across our range of offered services.

The league the founders club plays in has agreed to provide us a forum to present to the other clubs (circa 70), where we will initially offer a cost-effective solution to their requirements and subsequently the online pool betting platform.

The initial route to market will be via the presentation to the other clubs in the football league that the founders club plays in, facilitated by the league themselves who have shown positive support of the idea - circa 70 clubs (2700 teams)

Once proof of concept is established, we will expand geographically using a similar formula of approaching the leagues and presenting. In addition, we will utilise other marketing strategies such as boosting our online presence, direct email marketing to leagues/clubs and social media, alongside the addition of sales staff to the business.
